About Skin

Skin is the outer covering of the body responsible for protecting our internal tissue and organs in the form of a waterproof barrier. As the largest and fastest growing organ of the body, skin has many complex functions and some of its key roles are defence against external damage and loss of water, as well as regulating our body temperature. Additionally, with its complex sensory system, skin also allows us to communicate with the outside world through our sense of touch.

The appearance of the skin can have huge significance on person's self image. Skin problems such as itching, redness or soreness can cause discomfort and self-consciousness. Identifying those symptoms can even prevent a life-threatening condition – by obtaining an accurate diagnosis from a dermatologist we can help safeguard your skin's health and wellbeing.

  • The skin accounts for about fifteen per cent of our body weight
  • Skin, when stretched, covers an average of about two square meters
  • The thickest skin is found on the soles of your feet, it has no sebaceous glands and is about 1.4mm deep
  • The skin on your eyelids is the thinnest anywhere in the body – only 0.02mm thick
  • Your skin renews itself entirely every month or so
  • Dead skin cells that are lost from your body every minute, account for half amount of the dust in your home
