Scaling and Polishing

Dental Scaling and Polishing

A scaling and polishing is a very common dental procedure also known as dental cleaning, as it removes trapped debris and plaque and cleans your teeth very thoroughly. Scaling and polishing is carried out as part of preventative dental hygiene plan with the aim of keeping your teeth sparkling and healthy. The ‘scaling’ part of the procedure involves removal of soft and hard deposits and stains from the teeth and cleaning out the gum pockets that is carried out using an ultrasonic device that emits tiny vibrations to loosen large areas of scale. This is followed with a cool mist of spray that aims at washing away the deposited debris. Scaling removes the hard coating that forms on your teeth like scale inside a kettle that can't be removed just by brushing your teeth. Scaling also removes trapped deposits containing millions of germs, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Our dentist then use an Air Max, a technologically advanced dental device that is used for polishing after scaling as well as implant maintenance and periodical polishing. This sparkle and polish treatment is carried out using an Airflow technique. Quick and easy, this advanced method for removal of plaque and stains, etching of enamel and porcelain prior to bonding helps also in preparation for pit and fissure sealant, a preventive procedure carried out on the back teeth to make them more resistant to decay (the deep pits and fissures are sealed with a special material). As a final enhancement our dentist may apply fluoride treatment. Fluoride treatment is good at strengthening the teeth and helping prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It is an important treatment that aims at providing essential minerals to any teeth that have been weakened eroded by acid.

Scaling and Polishing should ideally be carried out every 6 months during regular dental visits as a preventative measure to ensure the optimal health of your gums and teeth. After completion, your dentist will provide you with instructions on proper oral hygiene measures to be carried out at home.
