Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions

Although permanent teeth are intended to last forever, sometimes, removing a tooth entirely may be necessary. This is the case when the tooth is too damaged to be able to receive a root canal or crown, or a wisdom tooth that is impacted or malposed.

What To Expect With Tooth Extraction

You will be thoroughly informed about your case and the procedure will be explained to you in detail. Dental Care @ Lesprit dentist has a special training to perform tooth extractions. Our dentist make sure that your procedure is done with the most profound care to ensure no pain or discomfort is felt during the procedure, that there is minimal trauma to the bone and soft tissues and optimal post-operative healing is maximized (no pain or swelling).

You will receive pre and post procedure instructions following your tooth extraction consultation. Following these instructions very closely will greatly help your comfort, promote healing of the area and contribute to over all success of the procedure.

Follow below post-tooth extraction care instructions to avoid any unwanted side effects:

THE FIRST 24 HOURS KEEP THE AREA UNDISTURBED

  • Do not smoke
  • Do not swish liquids or suck through the straw
  • Do not disturb the area and keep anything sharp from entering the wound
  • Be sure to chew on the opposite side for 24 hours.

The first 24 hours post surgery care adherence is critical and a further special care is very important for the next few days to help your body form a good clot and aid the natural healing process. Below are listed post-tooth extraction surgery care instructions to avoid any unwanted side effects:

TO CONTROL BLEEDING: Keep slight pressure on the same gauze pad for at least 30 minutes. Leave it undisturbed while a clot forms in the extraction socket. After 30 minutes remove it. If you feel the bleeding continues, you may bite on another gauze for another 30 minutes.

STOP SMOKING: Smoking should be stopped following tooth extraction as healing and success of the surgery will be substantially reduced as the cigarette chemicals harm your body. Also the suction created when inhaling cigarettes can dislodge the clot.

HELP WITH PAIN: Some discomfort is normal after surgery. To minimize pain, Take two Panadol tablets or similar non-aspirin pain reliever every 3 to 4 hours until bedtime to maintain comfort. Take it before the anesthesia wears off. If prescription pain medication is given, take it as instructed by the dentist.

REDUCE SWELLING: If swelling occurs, apply an ice bag to the face over the operated area for 15 minutes, then remove for 15 minutes. Continue this for few hours if necessary.

ANESTHETIC: The local anesthetic will cause you to feel the area numb for several hours after your surgery. Be very careful not to bite, chew, pinch, or scratch the numb area.

TEETH BRUSHING: Do not brush your teeth for the first 8 hours after surgery. After this, you may brush your teeth gently, but avoid the area of surgery for 3 days.

MOUTH RINSING: Avoid all rinsing or swishing for 24 hours after extraction. Rinsing can disturb the formation of a healing blood clot which is essential to proper healing. This could cause bleeding and risk of dry socket. After 24 hours you may begin gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon salt + 1/2 teaspoon soda + 8 ounces warm water). Avoid commercial mouth rinse.

ADJUST DIET: Eat soft foods for the first two days. Maintain a good, balanced diet. Return to normal regular meals as soon as you are able after the first two days. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol for 48 hours.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the remainder of the day. Keeping blood pressure lower will reduce bleeding and aid healing.

ANTIBIOTICS: If you were given an antibiotic prescription, take all of them as directed by the dentist.

FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS: You may need to return to us to have sutures removed, or just for a brief follow-up healing check.

Please call your dentist if you have:
